Road Surfacing, Highways and Traffic Management

The heartbeat of our business and what we’re built on. We have developed a broad range of services to offer and teams to work in, but something which has been consistent throughout this area of our business is our quality road surfacing.

We invented the modern road surface over 150 years ago, and as technology and innovation has improved, so has our service to a wide variety of customers and clients.

It’s so much more than laying roads though - our highways services business now provides maintenance and improvement advice to local authorities across the whole of the UK, supporting 17,500km of road assets. This is a brilliant part of our organisation to join as it’s what we’re known for and what we pride ourselves on. There are plenty of different types of roles in this team whether you’re just starting out in your career or after a new challenge in your career and the industry.

Our Teams

Pave – The team at the centre of it all, carrying that outstanding reputation we’ve built over the years laying roads efficiently, effectively and as sustainably as possible. Our pave teams resurface all different types of surfaces, from car parks to key motorways used by thousands of cars every day. Technology and innovation have made the job much safer and more strategic in recent years, and it’s an exciting opportunity to have a career where you’re able to add value to the UK’s infrastructure.

Traffic management – You’ll ensure everything is organised and ready to go when we need to work on public roads or motorways. Nobody likes roadworks, so it’s an opportunity to help ensure things run smoothly and efficiently. You’ll work strategically to make road closures clear and obvious, manage and communicate diversions for traffic, set up temporary traffic lights and manage equipment delivery to site works including traffic cones and signage.

NRP (National Road Planing) - The team that head in first to prepare the roads to be resurfaced. The focus here is on planing (digging up) the roads and then ensuring we recycle and re-use those materials elsewhere. The focus on sustainability in this team is significant and it’s a brilliant opportunity to get more involved with the full life cycle of road resurfacing.

Pavement solutions – This area of the team works heavily on our HS2 contract, offering innovative solutions to help construct different areas of the project. The goal here, as ever, is to work as sustainably as possible, embedding methods such as laying whitetop roads as opposed to blacktop (concrete roads instead of asphalt) to reduce our carbon footprint. A great team to join to have a real impact on the UK.

Highways Services – Our Highways Services team offer the most diverse range of roles overall. The team secures and manages key maintenance contracts with local authorities to manage and upkeep local roads and services. Work can range from filling in potholes and winter maintenance tasks like gritting, all the way to roadside debris management and street management. Each contract is different, and you’ll be exposed to a variety of work and opportunities to learn how we operate as a wider business.
